Sustainable Wastewater Solutions for a Climate Responsible Future

Based in Port Stephens, Australia, WET Systems (WETS) provide extensive expertise in ecological technologies to deliver integrated, nature-based, climate-friendly, sustainable wastewater solutions. We offer leading innovative wetland design and engineering services throughout Australasia and internationally, specialising in challenging wastewater from industrial, oil & gas, landfill, agricultural and remote sites. A key priority for WETS is to apply its know-how to develop sustainable wastewater management systems for developing countries and First Nations communities in the Asia-Pacific region. We also specialise in wetlands for biodiversity benefits, including natural ecosystem restoration and installation of floating wetlands.

Areas of expertise:

  • Management of wastewater, produced water and process water from oil and gas operations
  • Floating Wetlands for habitat and water quality improvement (stormwater & wastewater)
  • On-site, decentralised and municipal sewage treatment and polishing
  • Treatment of landfill leachate, industrial effluent, sludge, and urban & rural drainage
  • Wetlands for brackish and saline waters, including mangroves for Blue Carbon
  • Wetland restoration, management

WETS founding Director and Senior Designer, Dr Tom Headley, has been working with wetlands since 1996. Starting from a strong research foundation, Tom has always placed emphasis on the practical application of scientific knowledge in the use of wetland technologies to solve real world challenges around the world. Since 2011, Tom has been senior wetland design specialist for one of the largest and most inspiring industrial constructed wetlands in the world, which passively treats 175,000 m3/d of oily wastewater using 491 ha of surface flow wetlands in the desert of Oman.

Floating Wetland ecosystems

In 2022, WET Systems designed and installed 5 floating wetlands across three sites along the Yarra River (Birrarung) in the CBD of Melbourne (Australia). Planting more than 60 native wetland and riparian species, the floating wetlands provide a low-impact way of re-naturing this urbanised river and provide a refuge for wildlife to live and breed, safe from predators.

Warrambui Retreat and conference Centre

WET Systems designed and constructed an upgrade to the on-site wastewater treatment system at this remote, rural resort which accommodates up to 200 visitors. Raw sewage enters a deep Partially Mixed Aerated Lagoon (PMAL) for primary treatment and solids digestion before being loaded onto Vertical Flow Wetlands (VFWs) for nitrification and removal of TSS and BOD. Part of the effluent from the VFWs is recirculated back to the inlet of the PMAL to achieve denitrification and Total N removal, whilst stabilising variability in the inflow quality and quantity.

Nimr Water Treatment Plant, Oman

In 2017 – 2019, Tom Headley (WETS) designed and coordinated construction and planting of the 130 ha Surface Flow Wetland expansion to this oilfield produced water treatment system, owned and operated by BAUER Nimr LLC in Oman. The system now has a capacity of 175,000 m3/d and includes 491 ha of Surface Flow Wetlands.
