- Needs:
Two stage reed bed filters fed with raw sewage have become very popular in France for the treatment of waste water in rural areas. They very efficiently treat organic and nitrogen compounds, but remove little phosphorous, as phosphorous cannot be mineralized and as sludge production is very low, little phosphorous is exported. However, in the case of Aumont, p-removal was required, so the wetland treatment plant had to cater for this.
- Solution:
In order not to have to install electromechanical equipment and not to have dot to dose chemicals, a third filtration stage, using a reactive media composed of phosphorites, which are natural rock phosphates containing apatite.
- Benefits:
It is aimed that the apatite filter will retain phosphorous for a least 10 years without an operating costs and that tin the end the phosphorous can be recycled for P-fertilizer production.
