Needs
The Ouagadougou park, with an area of over 1 ha, was built in Grenoble en 2007 and 2008. Storage and treatment of stormwater (runoff) from the roofs of buildings and adjacent roads was integrated into this park in order to meet irrigation needs of the park and to reduce discharge of stormwater into the municipal sewer system.
Solution
Stormwater runoff flows along the following path:
· Stormwater from the roofs of the buildings is collected on the surface and directed towards the park.
· Stormwater run-off from adjacent roads flows into reed bed filters upstream of the park
· The two streams are collected, filtered and divided by “nozzles” into several irrigation ditches. These ditches wind through gardens with plantations or playgrounds
· In the end, the surplus water is collected in the heart of the park in a wetland area which also provides the function of flood storage with a regulated, throttled discharge of the excess water into the municipal sewer.
Benefits
Two types of recreational uses have been created: formal playgrounds with special outdoor equipment and informal playgrounds on the grass areas around the “nozzles”. At the same time, a habitat for biodiversity is created in the center of the town.
