Needs

A series of five waste stabilization ponds was present in Saint Germain sur l’Ille. With an increase of population and higher discharge standards (phosphorus and nitrogen), it was required to improve the treatment capacity while using the same land. Maintaining an extensive treatment system was a proposal from SINBIO.

Solution

Three stage reed beds filters (vertical and horizontal), fed by pumping and gravity, followed by a pond fed by gravity. There is no primary treatment; the raw, only coarse screened sewage is fed directly on the first stage beds with storage of the filtered dried and mineralized solids on the surface of the beds for at least 10 years.

Benefits

The added reed bed filters allowed for boosting of treatment capacity and increasing of treatment efficiency with limited construction and low cost.
